Free Thanksgiving Write the Room Activity

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, and my students very excited for the upcoming holiday, I love finding resources that are not only engaging, but also embrace the excitement. Today I’m sharing a Free Thanksgiving Write the Room activity that my students enjoyed and learned as they used it.

When I started teaching kindergarten, I always incorporated literacy activities into my students learning, however, I wasn’t familiar with write the room activities. Once I saw them being used in other classrooms, and watching how much the kids enjoy them, I knew that I needed to start incorporating them into my own program. These activities are now always one of the first centers children choose and one that all of my students make sure to complete.

Write the room activities are a mix of a scavenger hunt and a chance to practice printing. It’s easy to set up and plan, especially with the free pages available below. Make sure to print the resource today and use it in your classroom, or at home with little ones to celebrate the holiday together.

Almost everything you need to set up this Thanksgiving activity is included in the printable resource below. You have some choice for which of the pages you want to use. There are also black and white copies of each of the pages. These pages can be a lot of fun if you have time to let children color the images after completing the activity.

There are two recording sheets that you can use. One of them includes lines for children to print each letter in each of the words children will print. This can help with younger children to support them in making sure that they properly copy and print each letter from the words. There is also a blank recording page (without lines) that children can fill out the letters on their own.

Activity Set Up

Start by printing either the color, or black and white pages. Cut out the strips with the word+picture (cut on the dotted lines.) Next, you can set these strips, or tape them around the room on walls or other surfaces. Make sure that wherever you place the words that they are visible for children to find. Place all ten word+picture strips around the room.

Next, give each child a copy of the page that says, “Happy Thanksgiving”. This is the recording page. They will walk around the room and once they find one of the word+pictures, they match it to the picture on the recording sheet and print the word beside it.

Challenge children to find all ten of the pictures and print the corresponding word beside each. Often when I did this activity with a class, I would laminate the recording page and use dry erase markers. This way, when children were done printing the words, they wiped off their page and another child would then start the activity. This way the pages were able to be reused and I could store them to use again next year.
