52 Show and Tell Ideas Kids Will Love

I remember when my kids were in kindergarten and it was their turn for Show and Tell. Every month they would get so excited when their special day came. Show and Tell is a tradition in many early years classrooms. As a kindergarten teacher now, I know that my students look forward to Show and Tell and the new theme each month. However, it can be tricky to come up with enough Show and Tell ideas to provide new and engaging activities each month.

That’s why I created this resource. Over the years I took all of my students favorite Show and Tell topics and then created this resource with fifty two different and exciting ideas.

One of the great things about this resource is that it provides you with enough ideas to last you for years. In my kindergarten classroom, we give students a different idea each month that they present to the class. Below you will find some examples from the resource.

Show and Tell Resource

You can use the resource however works best for you. Many of the pages work well on their our for a quick and independent activity for children to share something about themselves. Including Show and Tell into your program requires some support from parents, but it is easy for them to complete with their child.

Show and Tell basically requires each child in a class/group to present something simple and quickly to the class. Typically, I have two children each day that present and it takes until ten minutes. Children sit at the front of the group and tell everyone about the page/topic that they prepared for.

This resource gives you a printable page to help guide parents at home. The page also helps by providing teachers with a hard copy of information in case a child get nervous and needs support presenting.

Using the Resource

When I use this resource in my classroom, I chose which ten topics/pages I wanted to use for the year (September-June). I then printed copies of the page each month and sent a copy home with each child. Parents could then plan and discuss the presentation with their child. There is also a letter in the file that you can print and send home to families explaining what the Show and Tell expectations are.

It is a great way for children and parents to work together without it being time consuming homework. It also helps parents prepare their child for their presentation. This can help make children feel more comfortable and confident. There is a printable reminder note that you can send home to remind children (and parents) of their upcoming presentation. This helps avoid disappointment if a child forgets their Show and Tell.

Within the resource there is also a checklist so you can keep track over the years or months which of the Show and Tell pages you have used. Show and Tell is also a great way to access a child’s oral communication skills. You can use the marking rubric that’s included in the file.

Show and Tell Ideas for Literacy

A great page to start with at the beginning of the year is the “All About Me” page. This is a simple page that is easy for kids to fill out at home with parents. It tells five quick things about each child that is easy for them to then share with the class.

Some of the pages encourage children to bring a special item into school, other pages children simply have to fill out and share with the class. You can also choose pages based on what you are working on in class. For example, as we established letter sounds and started word families and rhyming, I used the “Things that Rhyme” page to easily reinforce and integrate our reading program with Show and Tell.

Science Show and Tell Ideas

Another great Show and Share option is, “Cool Changes.” This printable and activity encourages children to find something that changes in some way. They bring in one of the objects and either shows the change, like popcorn kernels into popcorn, or tells about the change, such as a seed into a tree or plant.

This Show and Tell is an easy way to bring science into your classroom. Children will each show their peers how things around us grow and change. This particular activity requires a bit more thought and effort from parents at home, but the page briefly explains what you are hoping for, which helps avoid extra work for you.

In February, around Valentine’s Day I tended to focus on kindness and love throughout the month so this, “Kind Kids,” page is a great choice to reinforce kindness all month long. Children will fill out the page, or draw a picture and share an act of kindness that they have been shown, or shown themselves.

The final example from the resource is one of my favorites, “10 Things.” Children choose any ten things from home as part of a collection. This can be anything from Cheerios or coins to pompoms or hair elastics. This is an easy way to bring math into your Show and Tells. You can hang onto each child’s collection and work on counting by tens, or show what one hundred looks like.

This resource has been a lifesaver for me over the years. I love doing Show and Tells and think they have a lot of value in the classroom, but it can be hard to come up with ideas that are easy, but meaningful. This collection of pages are my, and my students favorites from over the years.
