I have memories of doing acrostic poems in class as a child. For various seasons and holidays my teacher would give us a copy of an acrostic poem that fit the current theme and we chose words that made sense to us for each letter. Then we got to color it and they’d post it on the wall or bulletin board. Introduce your children or students to the fun of acrostic poems with this Free Christmas Acrostic Poem Template.
One of the great things about acrostic poems is that it gives kids the opportunity to create one that’s personal to them. There’s no right or wrong words to choose. Children choose the words for each letter that they feel are the best fit.
Despite all children being given the same letters, everyone’s poems are always different. As a child, part of the fun was seeing what my peers created and the words they chose.

How to Make an Acrostic Poem
Even if you don’t consider yourself a poet, or haven’t taught poetry to your students yet, if you’re planning on doing the acrostic poem in class, this form of poetry is a great place to start. It is simple for children to fill out and create.

Acrostic poems are poems created by using the first letter of a word, like “Christmas” and finding a word that matches, or fits the theme. For example, for the word Christmas, the C could stand for:
- Candy Canes
- Candle
- Cards
- Celebrate
- Carols
- Chimney
- Christmas Tree
- Cheer
The list could go on and on and children will always think of words that are really creative. Kids find a word for each letter and print it beside the letter on the page.
The resource includes a black and white copy as well as a color copy. The black and white copies can be great for kids because they can color the page once they are done creating their poem.

You can also choose to laminate a copy for children to fill out at a classroom center. Use the printables in whatever way works best for you.
