Free Alphabet Kindergarten Activity Materials

As a teacher, I’m always looking for activities that I can create that will last with many children using them and are inexpensive to make. For this activity, you will need:

  • Velcro Dots
  • Printable Alphabet Page (Free Download at the bottom of the page)
  • Large Board (i.e. Bristol Board)

Creating your Alphabet Match Board

Start by printing the alphabet pages. Each letter of the alphabet is included in upper and lower case. If you have access to a laminator, it is best to laminate the pages to make them last longer.

Once the letters are printed and laminated, cut out each letter. On the back of each lower case letter, stick a Velcro dot.

Bristol board works well or any other material you have available that the letters can be stuck to. I like to use bristol board because it can be moved around and used anywhere in the room.

I painted my bristol board to make the white letters stand out more, but you can make your board any color you want.

Next, attach the letters to a large, sturdy board. Start by gluing the upper case letters down on the board. Hot glue works well.

Next, add the lower case letters slightly adjacent to the upper case letters. Stick the velcro down and create your matching letter alphabet.

Once you have all of your letters secure, your alphabet kindergarten activity is ready! There are several ways you can use the matching game. I have listed some ideas below.

Group Match Game

The first way I used this alphabet board was with a group of ten students. These students were working on their letter recognition and benefited from the practice. I have each child a few lower case letters to hold and identify.

We then went through the alphabet, by pointing at the upper case letters. After saying the sound the letter makes, children looked at the letters in their hand and decided if they had the match to the upper case letter. If they did, they stuck it to the velcro below the upper case letter. We continued through the letters until our alphabet was complete.

Alphabet Kindergarten Activity – Classroom Center

Another way you can use the board is to set it up as a classroom center. Place the bristol board on a table or another spot in the classroom. Remove the lower case letters and place them all in a bowl or container.

Children choose a letter and have to find it’s match on the board. Encourage children to work independently and then it can be checked when they are done.

Another alternative to the activity is to velcro all of the letters to the board. So the upper case letters are not glued to the board, but rather removable with the velcro.

Place all of the letters in a bowl or container near the board. Children choose a letter and place it on the board. They then have to find the matching lower case letter.

Mixed Up Order

Another idea to try with your letter board is to create it slightly differently. If you are creating the board for slightly older children, you may want to try creating your board in an alternative way.

Instead of placing, and gluing the letters in alphabetical order, stick the upper case letters down in a random order. This way children have to find the lower case letter match, but with the added challenge of the letters being out of order.

There are lots of ways to use this alphabet board! I hope it brings lots of hands-on learning to your classroom, or home.
