Our family elf joined up many years ago. My kids loved waking up each morning and searching for their elf and whatever shenanigans they got into. However, as they got older, the excitement started to fade. It continues to take time and energy to make sure the elf was still doing what it’s meant to do, but there comes a point when you realize it’s maybe okay to stop. For older children, end your elf adventures with a final, free elf goodbye letter.
The letter explains why the elf won’t be moving anymore, and it doesn’t end all of the magic the elf holds. It gives kids an explanation they understand without taking away all of the Christmas magic.
So if your children are older, or have become less enthusiastic about their elf over time, make sure to print a copy of this letter for your kids.

Free Elf Goodbye Letter
The letter can be used before your elf arrives, or even during the holiday season. Whenever you feel that your children are ready.
The letter includes the following message to children:
OFFICIAL ELF NOTICE
This document has been prepared and delivered by the North Pole Elf Council on behalf of your assigned holiday elf.
After many joyful seasons of service, your elf wishes to share an important update regarding their holiday duties. As you have grown into thoughtful and capable young people, your elf has been invited to spread their magic to younger children who are in need of a little extra wonder this year.
Your elf may remain in your home during the holidays if you choose; however, they will not be moving from place to place as they once did. Their magic will instead be focused on bringing cheer to others who need it most.
If you agree to this seasonal reassignment, your elf will depart when the time is right. Thank you for all the years of laughter, imagination, and kindness you have shared together.
With official North Pole regards,
North Pole Elf Council Representative
Elf Retirement Letter
The letter allows older children to feel that they are helping and spreading magic to younger children. The letter also allows children to choose if they still want to be able to see their elf. If children decide their elf friend should still be around over the holidays, they can find a spot in the home and stay there until Christmas.
The letter also suggests that children will receive a small present as a thank you for the time together. This can be anything from a fun experience together, like a movie, to a special present children have wished for.

Often if children are old enough, they won’t react too much to the letter, but it allows a bit of the magic to continue.
