As children learn to read, there are countless activities available to help each child become successful readers. From teaching young children, I have found that a mix of worksheets, hands-on activities, direct instruction is an effective way to teach phonics and reading. One of their favorite activities is a mix of a worksheet and puzzle. My students loved solving this Free Phonemic Awareness Activity for Kids so I’m sharing it with you today.
The worksheet is fun to do together as a guided lesson as a large group, or you can have each child work their way through the ‘maze’ on their own. The graphics are bright and colorful and appealing to young children.
Children will enjoy sounding out each picture, and figuring out the beginning sound, as they work their way through the maze, block by block. With many of my students it became a game as they raced to find the final Z letter. Although some children may identify the zebra as the last letter as soon as they look at the page, they still have to show their path through all of the images.

Alphabet Adventure Beginning Sounds
There is no prep involved for this activity. Simply print the page and give to children. Once printed, children start on the letter A and move their way through the maze. The next move is to the image that begins with the letter B, then letter C until the final picture that starts with Z.
Children will need to identify each photo and decide what letter the image begins with. If it is the letter they are looking for, then they will move to it and then search for the next image.

Phonics is such an important skills on the road to reading. If children can sound out words and letters, their reading skills will better develop. Using familiar and engaging images, like the ones in this free phonemic awareness activity, practicing these skills is almost like play for kids.
