Free Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt

The fall and Halloween are filled with lots of excitement for kids. From jack-o-lanterns to pumpkin pie, pumpkins are a staple with this season. In my kindergarten classroom, my students love learning and exploring everything pumpkin related. This Free Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt is a new favorite!

I love finding activities that are easy to prepare and mix learning with fun. So grab a few pumpkins for this simple pumpkin hunt activity. It is not Halloween or fall specific, so you can use the activity anytime during the season!

You can choose to do the activity outside and set up as you go on a walk, you can set it up around a classroom or home. The possibilities are endless, but however, you set it up, kids will love going on the hunt.

This free pumpkin scavenger hunt was inspired by another activity I did years ago with different pumpkins, but also great for kids: Fall Activity for Kids (Free Printables)

I created the activity for my preschool/kindergarten students, so the images are all cute and fun, not spooky. So have some fun this Halloween, or fall and send kids on a colorful scavenger hunt!

For this activity you will need:

  • Dry Erase Markers (Optional)
  • Clip Boards (Optional)

I used mini pumpkins when I did the activity, because we did the hunt in the classroom. However, you can use any sized pumpkin you want or a combination of sizes based on what you have on hand.

Preparing Your Materials

Start by preparing your pumpkins. Paint each pumpkin a color of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.)

Next create dots on each pumpkin a slightly darker, or lighter shade of paint than the base color.

Once you have painted, let your pumpkins dry. If you are planning to do the activity several time or plan to keep the pumpkins for while, I suggest adding a layer of protective coating to the pumpkins. The paint will often chip off the pumpkin otherwise.

Next, print the pages included in the resource. The Pumpkin Patch page (with the orange background) can be printed and used with pencils or markers, or laminated and used over and over with dry erase markers.

I used the activity as a center in my classroom. So I laminated five Pumpkin Patch pages and attached the pages to clipboard for children to search and fill out the form while moving throughout the room.

Free Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt Set Up

Once you have your pages and pumpkins ready, cut out the pumpkin color cards. Set each card with the corresponding pumpkin.

These cards are optional, but if you use them children are encouraged to print the color below the pumpkin picture on the Pumpkin Patch sheet. This is a great way to mix in more learning and turns the activity into a write the room type activity. Kids love using the dry eraser markers, so it is a fun addition to the activity.

Place each pumpkin and corresponding color card in different spots around the area you will do the hunt. If you have older children or are doing the activity at home, you can hide the pumpkins in more challenging places to find.

Once everything is hidden, you’re ready to being your Free Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt.

Free Fall Activity for Kids

Children will love searching for the pumpkins and because they’re painted and look different than regular pumpkins, kids will be excited as they find them.

Whether kids work independently or in groups, encourage them to print each of the words on their sheets.

I spread the pumpkins out and hid them all over the room. Some were far more difficult than others, but eventually all of the pumpkins were found.

This fall scavenger hunt is a great way to embrace how excited kids are about the season and upcoming Halloween, while continuing to make learning a priority.

Children work on their printing skills as they write the color. They work on their observation skills because they have to search, explore and find each pumpkin before they complete the activity.

I hope your children enjoy this activity as much as mine did!

Extension Ideas for Your Scavenger Hunt

There are lots of great ways that you can change this activity to fit your players interests.

If your kids are older or working in groups, I suggest hiding the pumpkin. Place them in spots that they aren’t visible. This will extend the time to complete the activity.

You can also create lots of pumpkins with different designs and colors, but only have the six pumpkins with polka dots. Children may find a blue pumpkin, but have to keep on searching until they find the one with dots.

You don’t have to use the pumpkin color cards, but I find it adds accountability because children have to fill the color name out on their sheet. If you don’t want to use the cards, you can simply have children put a check mark or cross out the pumpkin when they find it.

Plus the colorful pumpkins are really cute to put out on your porch for Halloween.
