Kids love learning about dinosaurs! It’s fascinating to learn about these extinct creatures and all of their unique features and facts. If you have kids at home, or in your classroom who love everything dinosaur related, you’ll love this Dinosaur craft for kids.
After exploring and learning about dinosaurs in my kindergarten classroom, using a collection of 30+ Best Dinosaur Activities for Kids, everyone designed and created their own dinosaur sock puppet.
Use the free printable template to encourage children to think about their design before starting. Will your dinosaur have wings? How about polka dots or stripes? If you could create your own dinosaur, what special features would you give it?
Children get creative with this art project and make a dinosaur that they can play with after your dinosaur unit is over. Try adding a Free Dinosaur Scavenger Hunt to your program as well.
Dinosaur Craft for Kids Materials
For this project, you can use any art materials that you have on hand. There are no special craft supplies needed. For socks, you can use any color. I suggest making sure to use an adult sock so that it will fit a child’s hand and allow for room to create a mouth.
Some suggestions for materials include:
- Socks
- Felt Pieces
- Pipecleaners
- Yarn/String
- Googly Eyes
- Buttons
- Puffy Paint

Planning Template
Start by giving children a copy of the “Design a Dinosaur” hand puppet template. Instructions on how to download the page, for free can be found below at the bottom of this post.
You can choose to let children use their imagination and create a dinosaur that is entirely made up. Otherwise, you can encourage children to create a dinosaur based on the features of an actual dinosaur.
Dinosaur Craft for Kids
When I did this activity with my class, we allowed kids to create any kind of dinosaur they wanted. The more details, the better. Start by showing the materials that kids will be able to use.
Next, children begin drawing their dinosaur. Once drawn they can start creating their sock puppet.
It may be hard to recreate the dinosaurs from the drawing exactly, but it will give them ideas as they create.
Although the sock puppets don’t need to have a mouth that opens and closes, if you plan to use and play with the dinosaur puppet after creating, making the mouth moveable is best.
Encourage kids to consider the materials available as they draw.
Dinosaur Craft for Kids Results
Once children have created a rough design of what they want their dinosaur puppet to look, begin creating. Hot glue is best to use and will last longer than white glue.
The creations are amazing! Every sock puppet will likely be very different from each other which is one of the best parts. Add lots of details and encourage children to test out their puppet as they create.
Give kids lots of time to create their sock puppet. Once finished, kids can play and act out with their dinosaur creature. It’s also a great opportunity to ask kids about their dinosaur and it’s features.
