I love teaching art to my kindergarten class. They are always keen to work with new materials and create unique pieces of art. I created this easy yarn craft at home with my own kids, who loved it so much that I had to bring it into my classroom for my students to try.
One of the best things about this project is that it is inexpensive to make and many of the materials you will need, you may already have on hand if you have children at home, or teach in a classroom.
This art project is great for working on fine motor skills and it gives children the freedom to create any image or picture, using the materials supplied.
If you don’t want to have each child create their own art, you can also create one larger piece and work on it as a group. Each child adding to it, until the whole page is covered. This idea works well in the classroom as a center.
Although this project uses simple materials, some of the best projects use materials children are familiar with, but they are used in a different way.
Easy Yarn Craft Materials
For this project, you will need:
- Yarn (A variety of colors works best)
- Felt Shapes
- Large Popsicle Sticks (Tongue Depressors)
- Hot Glue
- Adhesive/Tacky/ Contact Paper
For the yarn you use, you can use any thickness and any color(s). If children have an idea in mind of what they want to create, providing a variety of colors is best. You can also simply provide any assortment that you already have on hand.
You don’t have to use felt shapes for this easy yarn art, however, they can help add details to the final product and can also help give young children a focus as they creative.
Clear contact paper works best, but any form of sticky paper will work. I like the clear paper because the completed art looks beautiful in a window. Clear paper allows the sun to shine through.

Easy Yarn Craft Frame
Start by creating your frame. Use four jumbo popsicle sticks and glue them together to create a frame (as shown). Next, cut a square of contact paper to fit on the back of the frame. Remove the backing and stick it to the frame. The sticky part of the paper needs to be set under the frame facing up.
Once you have created your frame, you’re ready to start adding your felt pieces and yarn!
Craft Project for Kids
Start by sticking/setting a few felt shapes onto the sticky paper. The shapes should stick just by pressing down on them. Once your shapes are in place, it’s time to start sticking down the yarn.
Children can choose to add any colors to their sticky paper they want. Start at one of the shapes and carefully press the yarn around the shape to create the same shape as the felt shape.
Continue around the shape until you want to change colors. You can fill your frame with the same color of yarn or include as many colors as you wish. You can also stick the yarn down in any direction and pattern you want.
Easy Yarn Craft Details
When doing this easy yarn craft project, you may find it is tricky to get the yarn into some places. A toothpick is the best (and easiest) tool to use to help be more precise.
Stick some yarn down and use the toothpick to push the yarn into the corners and edges. This will help better create the different shapes.
Continue filling in all of the parts of sticky paper in your frame. Each corner or section can be any color and design, with the yarn you want. Kids will have fun creating different designs and squiggles.
Once you have filled your frame, press down on the yarn to make sure that it is stuck. You can choose to place another sheet of contact paper on top of the yarn to help secure it into place.
Another option is to add white glue on top of the yarn and let it dry, and harden into place. If your contact paper is strong enough, your yarn should hold in place without these extra steps.
Easy Yarn Art Result
The end result is a beautiful yarn picture. With lots of colors and designs, all made from yarn, it is a beautiful project, you’ll be happy to display for years.
If you used clear contact paper, make sure to hang the frame in a window. The yarn looks very beautiful with the sun shining through.
I hope your easy yarn craft turns out as beautifully as my kids, and students did.
