Free Halloween Literacy Activity for Kids

Kids love Halloween. As soon as the calendar flips to October, all of my students start talking about Halloween. My own kids have their costumes planned early in the month. The excitement can become a bit of a distraction in the classroom, so I try to plan activities that embrace the excitement. I love using this free Halloween literacy activity for kids each year because it’s easy to set up and my students always love it.

Printing skills are essential, especially in the early years. But having kids print their letters over and over is usually not the most effective way to teach these skills.

By making the activity interesting and something kids want to do, makes it engaging and more learning happens. This literacy activity is often called a “Write the Room” activity. With a pencil or dry erase marker in hand, children move around the room to find each of the posters with a different Halloween word.

This Halloween write the room activity can be set up in minutes. Print the ten pages and post them or place them around the room. You can use all ten pages, or choose the ones you want your children to find and print on.

I usually laminate the pages before posting them in the room so that they can be used over and over.

I think these write the room type activities are always so popular because to kids, it feels like a game. It is a lot like a scavenger hunt where kids have to find each of the pages somewhere in the room. Some may be posted on the wall, others may be on a table.

Once children find the page, they carefully print the Halloween word found at the top of the page. Encourage children to be mindful when printing their letters and use the word at the top as a guide. Letters should stay inside the lines.

Once they have completed one of the pages, children then search to find the next one. I typically give five kids a dry erase marker, ideally different colors, so that I know which pages are complete and who missed a page.
