Free Preschool Music Activity

My singing voice is not my strength, but I love to sing to my young students. It seems to calm the room and engage children right away. I often teach music lessons to my students and work hard to find and create meaningful activities. If you’re looking for a music lesson that young children will love, make sure to grab this free preschool music activity.

I love exploring songs that I remember as a child and preparing lots of hands-on lessons and activities to create a love for music. Whether you teach preschool, kindergarten or grade school, music class is an easy way to keep children focused and learning.

Part of music, especially at a young age is exploring and recognizing different sounds. When children are introduced to this skill the sounds don’t have to be instruments or scales. They can be everyday sounds that children are encouraged to distinguish between and recognize.

Kindergarten Music Lesson

As a teacher, I love finding activities that I can easily prepare and understand. This lesson is straight forward and simple for young children. Best of all, it’s free!

I like using this activity with a full class, but you can use it any way you wish including small groups. Start by printing the two pages of activity cards/pictures. Cut so that you have sixteen cards. I printed a set for each child in my class. Once you print the cards, you can laminate them so that you can use them multiple times.

Have children look through the images and discuss any that they may not recognize.

Once each child has a set of cards in front of them, you’re ready to start.

Once each child has their cards, encourage them to think about what sound each of the pictures would make. Having them consider the sound ahead of time can help young children identify the sounds.

YouTube is a great resource for this activity. For each photo, find a sound effect video.

Find and play one of the sounds for a picture. For example, play the sound of a clock ticking. Children listen to the sound and have to find the card that matches the sound.

Once children find the matching card, you can tell the correct image/sound or go onto the next sound. Play a sound effect for each of the images for children to find the matching picture for.

Some of the images are going to be much more challenging. For example, a crackling fire or party horn may be harder than identifying an owl or bee. The harder sounds are still a great way for children to learn.

Another option is to do the activity without the cards. You can play the sounds for the images featured on the cards, but not hand out the cards for children to match.

Although this lesson was created for a music activity, the lesson is also great to reinforce focus and concentration, which is an important skill for any subject!
