With the birds chirping, rainy days and buds starting on the trees, spring is a wonderful time of year filled with change and wonderful things. Bring the excitement of the season into your classroom, or home, with this Free Spring Word Building Activity.
The printable word pages are available for free to subscribers, so make sure to download and print them to make prepping this activity easy and free!
Language based activities are essential for young children. Being able to create, and being to read words is a skill that can be taught in many different ways. Hands-on learning is one of the best ways and easiest ways to keep kids engaged as they learn.
I set up this center in my kindergarten classroom and my students loved searching for and matching each letter. I loved hearing them sound out the letters and even reading the words. There is a lot of learning that happens with the activity.

Free Spring Word Building Activity Materials
If you work with young children, you probably already have some alphabet pieces/manipulatives that you can use for this activity. The only other material you need are the free printable words that you can download at the bottom of this page.
Each of the word cards feature a simple spring word for kids to build with the alphabet tiles. If you can laminate the words it helps make them last for years.
I used scrabble pieces for this activity which added an extra level of challenge. The letters on the printable words are all lowercase, whereas the scrabble pieces are uppercase. Children therefore had to identify the letter printed in lowercase and be able to find the matching uppercase.
Make sure that each of the letters used to make the words can be found in the letters you put out and you may need more than one of each letter, especially the vowels.
Set all of the letter pieces along with the printed spring words and you’re ready to start.
Kindergarten and Preschool Activity
Since I used scrabble pieces, I also placed the letter holders at each center for kids to use. If you don’t have these, or if you use other alphabet pieces, then the alphabet letters can be placed on the word card.
Challenge children to create each of the words on the word cards. Kids can either work on their own to find each of the letters, or work in groups. Once they have made the word, encourage them to sound out, and say the word.
The image associated with the word is printed on each card to help with reading and phonics. I hope that your kids enjoy this spring word building activity as much as my students did.
