Spring Math Activity for Preschool Materials
You don’t need a lot of materials for this activity. You can make it more themed with special materials, but they aren’t required. I usually use this activity as a center during our play based learning time. I set the center up for four children, which works well. You will need:
- Nests
- Eggs
- Dice
- Printable Math Strips (free at bottom of post)
I used coconut husk baskets from a local dollar store, but you can use any bin, container or nest type bowl you can find. I’ve used simple bowls before and hot glued sticks around the top to make them look like nest, but you can use anything you have on hand. I also added a few colorful birds to the ‘nests’ to add to our spring theme.
I was able to find white plastic eggs to use for the activity as well. Do not use real eggs. Plastic Easter eggs can also work well. Having at least 20-30 eggs is best.
The printable strips are available, for free to download at the bottom of this post. Print and use any of the strips that fit best with the skills you are working on with your children.
Within the printable resource, you will find an addition and subtraction page as well as a page to print a single number. Each of the pages are available in black and white and color.
Free Preschool Number Activity
To set up your activity, place one nest on the table for each child doing the activity along with one die for each child. Also place a large container, or nest with all of the eggs. This is the most simple version of the activity.
The child will roll the die and then move the number of eggs into their basket as rolled. Children have to recognize the value on the die and be able to count that number of eggs into their nest.
Children can play with a partner or they can work on their own. For older children, use the printable to encourage them to print the number on their die and then move the eggs.
The printable with the four rectangles can be laminated and cut into four parts. Children can use a write and wipe marker and practice printing the number before counting out the eggs.
Free Math Printables
If you have an older group, or some children ready for more of a challenge, print the other two math strips. Each strip can be laminated and then cut in half to provide two math strips. One encourages children to practice subtraction and the other addition.
Children will start by rolling one die. They will print the number and then roll the die again and print the second number. Children then add the value of the two numbers rolled and print that number in the final box on the strip.
Once they have completed the addition, they count the number of eggs and add them to their nest.
When using the subtraction cards, encourage children to roll two dice and then print the bigger number in the first square and the smaller in the second square. This way they can properly subtract. Once they have done the math and found the difference, they count that number of eggs and place them in their nest.

This spring math activity for preschool and kindergarten is a great way to encourage children’s excitement about spring while also learning essential skills.
Start with the first simple activity without any of the pages to print on. Then, work children up to trying the subtraction sheets. You can even have children working at different levels at the same center.
