New Years is the perfect time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future. It’s a great time, even for children, to reflect on what New Years means to them. Encourage this reflection with this Free New Years Acrostic Poem Template.
Acrostic poems are a great writing activity for children because they can be very simple for young children, by simply writing one word that starts with each letter. However, they can also become very complex by encouraging children to not only match words with the first letter, but writing several words to create a poem.
I have done acrostic poems with my own children and students many times over the years. They are a great way to get children thinking about the celebration and the words that represent the holiday. One of my favorite things about acrostic poems is that although all children are given the same letters to start with, their poems are always different.

All you need for this activity is a copy of the acrostic pome. It is included in the free printable in color and black and white. Use whichever works best for your kids. The color copy is more appealing, but the black and white copy works well if children finish the activity before others, they can then color the images on the page.
You can start by brainstorming words that children think of when they think about New Years, or just let children begin writing. Some of the challenge will come with being able to find appropriate and fitting words for each letter, but that’s also part of the fun.

Make sure to grab a copy and start writing. There’s no right or wrong answers as far as what words you choose to print.
Another option that I used in my classroom with this acrostic poem is laminating copies of the colored page. Laminate and use the pages as a center in your classroom. Provide dry erase markers and have children brainstorm and create their poem in small groups. When they’re done, they can eraser their work and another child can visit the center.
